At the intersection of Ćwiczebna and Ślazowa streets, near the Osobowicki Forest, we stood one April morning with shovels and 800 sessile oak saplings. Two hours later, every single one of them had found its place in the ground – and it was hard to believe that so much had been accomplished so quickly and in such a good atmosphere.
Students Who Took Matters into Their Own Hands
The student government of the University of Economics in Wrocław joined the action, and from the very beginning it was clear that this was not a team that needed motivating. The group rotated – some finished, others joined – but the pace never slowed for a moment. Actions like this show that ecological volunteering does not have to be on the margins of student life, but can be a natural part of it, rooted in the conviction that urban space belongs to everyone and that it is worth taking care of.
Engaging young people in real environmental action takes on particular significance at a time when climate change is no longer an abstraction, but an everyday experience – of increasingly warm years, longer droughts, and ever less greenery in cities. Why the Sessile Oak?
The sessile oak is one of two native oak species in Poland, alongside the pedunculate oak, and while the two are often confused, the sessile oak has its own distinct characteristics and requirements. It tolerates drought better and prefers permeable soils – which makes it a particularly valuable species in the face of climate change, as summer droughts grow longer and more severe. In terms of value for biodiversity, oaks are unmatched among European deciduous trees – 800 planted oaks represent a potential home for hundreds of species of insects, birds, and other organisms that will be connected to this one spot near the Osobowicki Forest for their entire lives.
The Osobowicki Forest Gains New Neighbours
The location of this action is no coincidence. The Osobowicki Forest is one of the larger forest complexes within the boundaries of Wrocław, playing a key role as a green lung for the city and an ecological corridor for many species. The plantings at Ćwiczebna and Ślazowa streets create a natural extension of this greenery, strengthening the connection between the existing forest and the surrounding urban space. Every tree planted in such a location acts as a link in a network – the more links there are, the more effectively the entire ecosystem functions.
