Sowing 3 kg of Seeds and Planting 2,000 Flower Bulbs with GSK in Moczydło Park in Warsaw | 22 April 2026
On 22 April, volunteers from GSK transformed 300 m² of Moczydło Park in Warsaw into the beginnings of something that will bloom in full splendour in a few months’ time. 3 kg of seeds and 2,000 bulbs went into the ground – crocus, iris, poppy, cornflower, cosmos, and marigold – each species chosen with a specific purpose: to feed bees, attract butterflies, and bring to life a patch of urban space that until now had little to offer wild insects.
A Meadow in the City – What For and For Whom?
Urban parks are beautiful, but traditionally maintained lawns have a serious drawback – for pollinators, they are practically useless. A uniformly trimmed lawn offers neither nectar, nor nesting sites, nor shelter. A wildflower meadow is a completely different environment: diverse, species-rich, and blooming in waves throughout the summer, which means continuous access to food for bees, bumblebees, butterflies, and other insects that are finding city life increasingly difficult. 300 m² is a small area, but on the scale of one park and one local insect population – it is a real difference that the coming seasons will feel.
Six Species, Six Purposes
The choice of plants for the meadow in Moczydło Park was no accident. Crocuses will be among the first to bloom in spring, when bees are just waking up after winter and desperately searching for their first nectar. Irises attract insects with long mouthparts that would not be able to reach the nectar of plants with shallower flowers. Poppies and cornflowers are classic meadow plants that have accompanied wild pollinators in Poland for centuries. Cosmos blooms long and abundantly, extending the foraging season deep into autumn. Marigold rounds off the set as a plant of exceptional medicinal value and at the same time an excellent source of pollen – and its intense orange colour acts like a magnet for insects.
Corporate Volunteering That Leaves Something Behind
The action in Moczydło Park is another joint initiative by One More Tree Foundation and GSK – a company with which we share a long history of fieldwork. Corporate volunteering in the GSK sense is not a one-off gesture of goodwill, but a consistent practice of engaging employees in real action for the environment and local communities – and it shows in every successive action. The team that arrived at Moczydło Park on 22 April did not ask what they had to do – they asked what for and for whom, enquired about every species, and wanted to understand the purpose behind every action. These are exactly the questions that please us most, because they mean that behind the work of hands lies genuine curiosity and commitment, not just a ticked box in the calendar.
What Will Remain After This Day
In a few months, a meadow will bloom on Górczewska Street. Not all passers-by will know where it came from – but the bees and butterflies will know where to return. We thank the entire GSK team for coming out into the field once again and leaving behind something that will keep growing long after this day.
