On 24 April, together with the S&P Global team, we set about tidying up the green spaces of Gdańsk. Reagan Park and the nearby woodland along Hallera Avenue and Czarny Dwór Street – that is where 18 volunteers collected around 20 bags of waste, each with a capacity of 120 litres. This is another joint action with S&P Global and further proof that corporate volunteering can leave something genuinely tangible behind.
What Does Litter Do to Forest Soil?
Waste left lying in forests and parks is a problem that goes far beyond aesthetics. Plastic bottles, foil, cans, and other materials take decades or even centuries to break down in the environment, gradually releasing toxic chemicals into the soil and water. Microplastics enter the food chain – first reaching the invertebrates living in the soil, then the birds and mammals that feed on them. Foil and string become lethal traps for small animals. Glass heats up in the sun and can cause fires. And where waste has been accumulating for years, the natural regeneration of vegetation is effectively blocked – because no plant can push through a layer of plastic and rubble.
A Forest That Cannot Look After Itself
Urban forests and parks today play a role that cannot be overstated – they are the lungs of the city, regulating temperature, retaining water, and providing shelter for species that have few alternatives in an urbanised environment. But the forest ecosystem, as remarkably resilient as it is, has its limits. A regularly littered area gradually loses its capacity for regeneration – ground-level plants disappear, insects vanish, and with them the birds and other animals that depend on them. Cleaning up green spaces is not a symbolic gesture, but a real intervention that gives nature a chance to breathe.
18 People, 20 Bags, Two Locations
Reagan Park and the woodland along Hallera Avenue are places that the residents of Gdańsk use every day – for walks, recreation, and contact with nature. 20 bags of waste collected by the S&P Global team represent tangible relief for these ecosystems, but also a signal to the local community that shared space is worth caring for and that it can be done together. The S&P Global volunteers once again showed that employee engagement does not have to be confined to the office – that it can be taken out into the field and leave behind something with a real impact on the surroundings in which we all live.
