Cleaning Żoliborz Beach with Salesforce in Warsaw | May 28, 2026

28.05salesforce

On May 28th, we met with a group of 18 Salesforce volunteers to help clean up the area around Żoliborz Beach by the Vistula River. Together, we collected 8 full bags of trash from the green spaces right along the riverbank. This spot, popular among Warsaw residents on warmer days, faces the same challenge as many other urban beaches – the more people use a recreational area, the more waste tends to be left behind on the shore.

Why littered beaches and rivers are a serious problem

Riverside areas like Żoliborz Beach are especially vulnerable to pollution, since trash left on the shore very easily ends up straight in the water. Plastic bottles, wrappers, and cigarette butts take years to break down in water, releasing microplastics and chemical substances that disrupt the river’s natural ecological balance. This has a direct impact on aquatic flora and fauna – fish and other water organisms can swallow small fragments of waste, mistaking them for food, while polluted water makes it harder for shoreline vegetation to grow, even though that vegetation naturally helps clean and stabilize the riverbank.

This problem isn’t limited to the Vistula alone – trash from one location can travel long distances carried by the current, eventually reaching seas and oceans, where it forms much larger clusters of pollution. Waterbirds get tangled in plastic bags and string, while fish and invertebrates suffer from reduced water quality and lower available oxygen. That’s why regularly cleaning riverside areas matters far beyond appearances – it’s a real form of protection for the entire chain of life connected to the Vistula.

Corporate volunteering as real environmental support

Events like this one show how much value corporate volunteering programs can add. For a company, it’s a chance to bring employees together around a shared goal beyond their everyday work, and for us and for the environment itself, it’s concrete, measurable help that doesn’t require any specialized knowledge – just willingness and a few hours of time. Partnering with companies this way lets us reach places and run cleanups at a scale we simply couldn’t manage on our own, while giving employees at partner companies the chance to see the results of their work with their own eyes, the same day.

Enthusiasm and atmosphere on site

Participants were clearly excited about both the cleanup itself and the location – the proximity of the Vistula and the sandy beach gave the event an unusually summery feel, even though the goal was cleaning up the area. That positive energy carried through into efficient work from the whole group, and the conversations between participants made the time spent cleaning pass quickly and pleasantly.

Thanks

Thank you to the Salesforce team for their commitment and for the wonderful atmosphere during this event. Caring for riverside areas takes consistency and patience, but the results – a cleaner shore and a healthier river – are genuinely worth it.
