Field Shelterbelts: The Forgotten Guardians of Farmland, Climate, and Biodiversity

When people picture environmental protection, they usually imagine a forest, a city park, or a tree-lined avenue. Few think of field shelterbelts — narrow strips of trees and shrubs growing among crop fields, along field boundaries and dirt roads. Yet for centuries these unassuming green lines were the quiet backbone of healthy farming across Europe, until post-war agricultural modernisation wiped most of them from the landscape. Today, as droughts, heatwaves, and soil erosion intensify, field shelterbelts are making a comeback — and it is worth understanding why.
What Exactly Are Field Shelterbelts?
Field shelterbelts are small clusters or rows of trees and shrubs growing outside forests, scattered among fields, meadows, and pastures. Unlike commercial forestry, they are not grown for timber; their role is primarily protective and habitat-forming. They can take many different shapes, from a single mature tree to extensive rows of vegetation stretching across a farm.
Types of Shelterbelts
The most common forms include:
- windbreaks – narrow, elongated plantings positioned perpendicular to prevailing winds,
- field copses – larger, denser clusters of trees and shrubs, often irregular in shape,
- hedgerows along field boundaries – single rows of trees separating individual plots,
- tree-lined farm lanes – trees growing along the dirt roads connecting villages and fields,
- scattered veteran trees – often remnants of old orchards or historic manor parklands.
Each form serves a slightly different function, but they all share one thing in common: the presence of trees in an agricultural landscape, precisely where at first glance they seem out of place.
A Forgotten Chapter of the Rural Landscape
A century ago, the European countryside was dotted with shelterbelts. Fields divided into narrow strips, typical of smallholder farming, naturally grew hedgerows full of trees and shrubs along their edges. This mosaic landscape favoured both agriculture and wildlife alike.
Everything changed with post-war land consolidation and the mechanisation of agriculture. Large, uniform fields were far more convenient for heavy machinery, so hedgerows, copses, and tree-lined lanes were cleared en masse, seen as obstacles to efficient production. In England and Wales alone, over a million kilometres of hedgerows have been lost since 1945, with the decline continuing well into the late twentieth century — roughly 400,000 kilometres remained managed by 2007, around 21% less than in 1984. Similar processes reshaped farmland across much of continental Europe, including Poland, where large-scale field consolidation programmes swept away countless historic shelterbelts.
Today, scientists and farmers alike are looking back at that transformation with growing concern — because along with the trees, the landscape lost functions that had protected soil, water, and harvests for generations. It is worth stressing that this loss was not a single event but a decades-long process, in which successive waves of land drainage, consolidation, and mechanisation gradually eliminated even small, isolated shelterbelts once dismissed as “unproductive” fragments of land. As a result, farmland in many regions became far more vulnerable to drought and erosion than it was half a century earlier, even though the two facts are rarely connected in public awareness.
A Shield Against Wind, Drought, and Erosion
The greatest, though often underappreciated, role of field shelterbelts is protecting soil and water. As droughts and violent rainstorms become more frequent, their importance grows year after year.
Wind and Water Erosion
Shelterbelts act as natural windbreaks — they reduce wind speed, limiting the loss of fertile topsoil, which is especially dangerous on large, open fields. Their root systems bind the soil together and prevent particles from being washed away during heavy downpours, significantly reducing the risk of water erosion on sloped or uneven terrain.
Water Retention and Microclimate
The deep root systems of trees improve soil structure and increase organic matter content, helping soil retain rainwater far more effectively. This directly boosts landscape-scale water retention and mitigates the effects of drought, an increasingly severe threat to European agriculture. Shelterbelts also regulate the local microclimate — raising air humidity, reducing evaporation from the soil surface, and moderating extreme temperature swings, which protects crops from both frost and heat stress.
Living Corridors of Biodiversity
Farmland, especially when intensively managed, is a remarkably poor environment for most wild species. In such a landscape, field shelterbelts become genuine oases of life.
Pollinators and the Farmer’s Natural Allies
Flowering shrubs and trees provide food for pollinating insects throughout much of the growing season, directly benefiting the yields of many crops that depend on pollination. Shelterbelts also host predatory insects and spiders that naturally keep pest populations in check — a kind of free, built-in biological pest control that reduces the need for chemical pesticides.
Birds and Small Mammals
For many farmland birds and small mammals, shelterbelts are the only available shelter, breeding site, and food source for kilometres around. In this sense, they perform a function similar to the one played on a larger scale by ecological corridors connecting bigger forest complexes — forming a network of “stepping stones” that allow species to move and survive within a fragmented agricultural landscape.
An Ally in the Fight Against Climate Change
While a single shelterbelt cannot store as much carbon as a hectare of forest, at a national scale their contribution to climate mitigation is significant. Trees and shrubs store carbon in their wood, but their impact on soil is just as important — the increased organic matter in soils surrounding shelterbelts means additional, long-term soil organic carbon storage.
Research conducted across Western Europe suggests that restoring networks of hedgerows and shelterbelts in agricultural landscapes can meaningfully increase soil carbon sequestration while also improving soil fertility. It is a solution that aligns climate benefits directly with the farmer’s own interest — healthier soil means more stable harvests.
Importantly, the climate benefits of field shelterbelts are not limited to carbon storage alone. By reducing water evaporation from the soil and moderating extreme temperatures, shelterbelts also ease the pressure on crops during heatwaves, which are becoming more frequent and more prolonged across much of Europe. As a result, farming becomes more resilient to weather variability, with shelterbelts acting as a natural buffer that shields the farm from some of the most damaging effects of the climate crisis.
Economic Benefits Rarely Talked About
Farmers who choose to restore shelterbelts on their land gain far more than environmental benefits alone. Among the most important economic effects are:
- reduced yield losses caused by soil desiccation and crop lodging under strong winds,
- lower use of plant protection products thanks to natural pest predators,
- higher-quality yields for pollination-dependent crops such as oilseed rape or orchard fruit,
- additional income from firewood or fruit harvested from certain shelterbelt species,
- improved farm microclimate, also beneficial for livestock seeking shade.
Back in Favour: Funding Support and Agroforestry
After decades of neglect, agricultural policy is finally recognising the value of shelterbelts. Across the European Union, national strategic plans under the Common Agricultural Policy now offer dedicated payments for establishing field shelterbelts, alongside multi-year maintenance premiums that reward farmers for keeping the new plantings alive and healthy over the following years.
In parallel, support for agroforestry systems is expanding — farming methods where trees and shrubs are deliberately integrated with crops or pasture on the same plot of land. These systems improve water infiltration, protect surface water quality, and improve the welfare of livestock that benefit from natural shade. Establishment grants and long-term maintenance premiums are increasingly available to farmers willing to adopt this multifunctional approach.
