Veteran and Monumental Trees: The Living Landmarks We Cannot Afford to Lose

When people think about protecting nature, the first image that usually comes to mind is planting new trees — and rightly so, that work matters enormously. Far less attention goes to the trees that have already been standing for decades, sometimes centuries, quietly acting as living witnesses to history. A veteran tree is a tree that has reached an exceptionally advanced biological age, often well beyond the typical harvesting age of a commercial forest stand. A monumental tree, in many legal systems, is a specific protection category granted to individual specimens that are considered especially valuable because of their age, size, landscape value, or historical and scientific significance.

Not every veteran tree receives formal legal protection, and not every monumental tree is necessarily ancient — sometimes the status is granted for other reasons, such as belonging to a rare species. In practice, though, the two categories overlap heavily, because it is almost always the oldest oaks, beeches, limes, or ash trees that end up on official protected-tree registries. It is worth remembering that age alone is not the only measure of a tree’s value: crown structure, trunk girth, the presence of hollows and deadwood, and above all the ecological role the tree plays in its surrounding landscape all matter just as much.

Why Old Trees Are Irreplaceable for Biodiversity

From an ecosystem’s point of view, a young tree and an old tree are essentially two different habitats. Over decades, ancient trees develop an intricate architecture of micro-habitats — fissured bark, hollows, fungal decay columns, and dead branches still standing within a living crown. Researchers estimate that a single old oak can host hundreds of species of invertebrates, fungi, mosses, and lichens, many of which simply cannot colonise younger stands because the conditions they need have not yet had time to develop.

  • Saproxylic beetles, such as the great capricorn beetle or the hermit beetle, which live in decaying wood and are considered among the best bioindicators of forest quality.
  • Bats, which hibernate and breed inside crevices in old trunks.
  • Epiphytic lichens, extremely sensitive to air pollution and requiring decades of uninterrupted bark growth to establish.

This means that losing a single centuries-old tree amounts to far more than losing biomass — it means the disappearance of a unique micro-ecosystem that would take another century to rebuild.

Old Forests as Natural Allies Against Climate Change

While young, fast-growing trees absorb carbon most quickly per unit of time, it is old trees and old-growth forests that hold the largest stored carbon reserves, locked away in trunks, roots, and forest soil. Studies conducted in natural forests around the world show that stands older than a century keep actively sequestering carbon, rather than merely holding it in a dormant state, as was long assumed.

Veteran trees also play a crucial role in regulating local climate and the water cycle. A wide, mature crown intercepts far more rainfall than that of a young sapling, reducing surface runoff and supporting soil water retention. A deep, well-developed root system reaches soil layers that younger trees simply cannot access, improving the resilience of the entire stand during drought periods. Protecting old trees, therefore, is not sentimentality toward nature — it is a concrete climate adaptation strategy.

The Everyday Threats Destroying Old Trees

Unfortunately, ancient trees are disappearing from landscapes across Europe and beyond at a pace that should concern all of us. Development pressure, road infrastructure expansion, intensified forestry, and simple lack of awareness mean that trees hundreds of years old are sometimes felled almost overnight, while the process of replacing what is lost is, on a human timescale, essentially impossible.

The Most Common Causes of Loss

  1. Felling for development — roads, parking lots, housing estates, and shopping centres are often built precisely where centuries-old avenues and groves once stood.
  2. “Tidying up” green spaces — removing dead or dying branches that are, in reality, a critical habitat rather than a hazard.
  3. Climate change itself — prolonged droughts, extreme storms, and pest outbreaks weaken even the hardiest, oldest specimens.
  4. Invasive diseases and pathogens, sometimes spread over long distances through the transport of timber and nursery stock.
  5. Lack of formal protection — many valuable trees have never been registered as protected specimens, which makes their removal far easier without legal consequence.

Each of these pressures is difficult to stop on its own, but together they create a real risk that future generations will only see truly old trees in photographs.

Legal Protection: How Monumental Tree Status Works

Many countries have long maintained a legal instrument for protecting individual trees, generally known as monumental or heritage tree status, established through nature conservation legislation. In most systems, local or municipal authorities grant this status through a formal resolution, and a nomination can typically be submitted by almost anyone — a landowner, a resident, a local school, or an environmental foundation. Once protected, the tree cannot legally be felled, damaged, or subjected to nearby work that would threaten its condition without approval from the relevant authority.

How to Nominate a Tree for Protection

The nomination process is usually simpler than most people assume:

  • Identify the tree and gather basic information — species, estimated age, trunk girth at breast height, and precise location.
  • Document its value with photographs and, where possible, a written description of its health, landscape, or historical significance.
  • Submit a nomination to the relevant local authority, ideally supported by a rationale prepared together with a local conservation organisation.
  • Follow up on the process and, if needed, involve local councillors, journalists, or community groups to keep momentum going.

It is precisely through nominations like these that tens of thousands of trees are now under formal protection in countries such as Poland, though experts estimate that many more valuable specimens still remain unregistered and unprotected.

The World’s Most Famous Veteran Trees

Central Europe may not have vast, untouched tropical wilderness, but it is home to trees with extraordinary histories. Bartek Oak, in central Poland, is estimated by different sources to be between 700 and over 1,000 years old and stands as one of the most recognisable symbols of the region’s natural heritage. Equally striking are the Rogalin oaks, where several thousand centuries-old oaks grow within a relatively small area — one of the largest concentrations of ancient oaks anywhere in Europe.

Elsewhere in the world, similar roles are played by California’s giant sequoias, olive trees on Crete estimated at over two thousand years old, and African baobabs, which local communities often treat as social and spiritual gathering points. What unites all these trees is a combination of favourable conditions and, frequently, deliberate protection by people who recognised their extraordinary value in time — before an irreversible loss could occur.

Protecting centuries-old trees does not have to be a task reserved for scientists or government officials. Everyday decisions made by residents, businesses, and local communities have a real impact on whether a given tree survives another few decades.
