Sometimes all it takes is a few planks, a screwdriver, and a bit of curiosity to start understanding how nature works around us. That’s exactly the lesson learned by children from three Children’s Homes in Silesia, who came together as part of Green Pulse of Silesia to build insect houses. The result of these three meetings: 15 new shelters for the beneficial residents of our gardens.

Why insects need houses

Solitary bees, ladybirds, and other small insects rarely make headlines, yet the health of local ecosystems depends largely on them. Pollinating plants, natural pest control, and maintaining biological balance in gardens – all of this happens thanks to tiny creatures that are finding it increasingly hard to find natural places to live. An insect house is a simple but effective response to this problem – it offers shelter where natural hiding spots are becoming scarce.

Workshops that engage all the senses

Building an insect house by hand is a completely different adventure than reading about ecology from a textbook – here, kids had to pick up a screwdriver, arrange planks, and think about how to design cozy little corners for the garden’s small inhabitants. Children of various ages, from primary school to high school, got fully engaged – curiously checking what makes a good insect shelter and asking about every detail. Questions kept coming one after another, and each meeting was full of energy and genuine curiosity. Sometimes the best nature lesson is simply building something together.

An effect that lasts

The finished houses went to the gardens of the Children’s Homes, where they will now serve insects for seasons to come. It’s not just a nice keepsake from an afternoon spent together, but also a small step toward noticing nature more often right next to us – in the lawn, on the balcony, in the garden by the house. We believe that this kind of shared activity stays in the mind longer than many a lesson about ecology.
